He made important improvements in the mirrors of reflecting telescopes and also developed prisms for use in refracting spectroscopes. He graduated as an engineer in Bologne in 1807, and served as professor of mathematics at the University of Modena from 1815 to 1825. He then became professor of astronomy and director of the observatory at the Royal Museum in Florence, where he also lectured at the museum of natural history. He made major advancements in compound microscope design. He used a hemispheric objective lens to get the first clear microscopic view in 1837. Using adjustments to the lens system, he constructed microscopes with magnifications as large as 6000 times. In 1840, he introduced the oil-immersion technique, in which the objective lens is immersed in a drop of oil placed atop the specimen under observation in order to minimize light aberrations. He used it to make discoveries about the circulation of sap in plants and the processes of plant reproduction. In particular, he demonstrated the sexual process in flowering plants. In astronomy he invented a combination of three prisms that is still used in spectroscopy and is known as the Amici prism. He made also improvements to reflecting telescope and observed Jupiter's satellites and certain double stars. Using an improved micrometer of his own design, he made accurate measurements of the polar and equatorial diameters of the Sun. Minor planet (3809) Amici is named in his honor, as is a crater on the dark side of the Moon.
